How to become a special educator in the UAE
It is an education licence, not a health one
This is the first thing to get right. Special educators are regulated as teachers, through the Ministry of Education and the local education regulators, KHDA for private schools and nurseries in Dubai and ADEK in Abu Dhabi. They are not licensed by DHA, DOH or MOHAP, which cover clinical therapy roles.
The exception worth noting: in Dubai, some special-education and behavioural roles delivered in social-care rather than school settings fall under the CDA. If your role sits in a centre rather than a school, confirm which regulator applies.
The core qualifications
Requirements vary by school and curriculum, but the common baseline is:
- A bachelor's degree, ideally in special education, education, or a related field.
- A recognised teaching qualification such as a B.Ed, PGCE or equivalent.
- The UAE Education Professional Licence for your teaching category, which involves passing the required tests.
- A clean background check (police clearance or equivalent good-conduct certificate).
- Attested certificates, schools and the regulators expect your qualifications to be properly attested.
