Moving from India to the UAE as a therapist: the full path

Before anything else: get your Indian paperwork in order

Under Section 13 of the RCI Act 1992, registration on the Central Rehabilitation Register is legally required to practise as a rehabilitation professional in India. It also matters for the UAE, because your Indian registration is usually one of the documents verified through DataFlow.

Check your status on the RCI e-Registration portal before you begin. Renewal is now on a five-year cycle, revised down from seven, and requires 100 CRE points across that period. Verifying a lapsed registration creates avoidable questions and delays.

Choose your emirate

This determines your licensing authority and it is not transferable, so it is a real decision rather than a formality:

• Dubai — DHA, or CDA for counselling and psychotherapy roles.
• Abu Dhabi and Al Ain — DOH, or DCD for social care and school counselling roles.
• Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, Umm Al Quwain — MOHAP.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi have the most therapy centres and the most openings, but also the highest cost of living. The Northern Emirates can offer a lower cost base, though with fewer roles.

Collect documents while you are still in India

This is much harder to do remotely once you have moved. Before you leave, get:

• Degree certificate and transcripts, including documented internship or clinical placement hours.
• RCI registration certificate, current and not lapsed.
• A good standing certificate, which often has its own processing time.
• Detailed experience letters from every relevant employer, on official letterhead, stating your job title, scope of practice, caseload and dates, and properly signed.
• Passport with sufficient validity remaining, and photographs to the required specification.

Tell your university registrar and your former HR contacts that a DataFlow verification request is coming. Institutions that expect the request respond considerably faster than those that do not.

Budget realistically

The predictable costs are DataFlow at around AED 935 for four documents, plus about AED 300 per extra document, and assessment fees on top. The oral assessment route, where available, is roughly AED 220 to apply and AED 270 for the exam. Authority licence fees vary.

Beyond that, budget for attestation, courier costs, travel, and living costs during the gap between arriving and being paid. Licensing is not the largest expense in the move, but it is the one people forget to plan for.

What the job market looks like

Demand has been growing. Industry reporting suggests UAE job postings for speech-language pathologists rose around 45% between 2023 and 2026, outpacing most other allied health professions. The drivers are investment in early intervention for autism and developmental conditions, the National Policy for People of Determination increasing referral volumes, school health screening now covering speech and language milestones, and Ministry of Education requirements for speech-language services in mainstream schools.

The practical consequence is that demand for qualified therapists currently exceeds supply in several disciplines. That is a genuinely good position to be entering the market in.

Before you accept an offer, check the employer

For Dubai health facilities, search the clinic on the DHA facility search and confirm the licence status shows Active. It takes two minutes.

Also confirm in writing who pays for what. Visa costs, licence fees, and whether the employer covers DataFlow are all negotiable and vary widely between centres. Get it in the offer letter, not in a conversation.
