How to hire therapists in the UAE

Last reviewed: 8 August 2026

The binding constraint when hiring therapists in the UAE is rarely the number of applicants. It is licensing and verification time. Candidates who already hold eligibility can start in weeks; those who do not can take months. Structuring your hiring around that single fact is what shortens time to fill.

Understand the real bottleneck

Most centres plan hiring around notice periods. In the UAE therapy market, the longer and less predictable delay is licensing. A candidate arriving from abroad has to complete DataFlow primary source verification, which depends on how quickly their university and former employers respond, and that is outside everyone’s control.

This has a direct operational consequence: a candidate who already holds an eligibility letter from your authority is worth substantially more to you than an equally qualified candidate who does not, even if the second candidate looks slightly stronger on paper.

Know which licence your role requires

Be specific in the job description, because it filters correctly and saves everyone time:

State the authority explicitly in the advert. "Must hold or be eligible for a DHA licence" removes a large volume of unsuitable applications immediately.

Where the supply is

A significant share of therapy talent for the UAE market comes from India, which is why the India to UAE pathway matters commercially. Those candidates are often well qualified and experienced, but need lead time for verification, and their experience documentation is frequently weaker than their actual experience.

Judging a candidate on the quality of their experience letters rather than their competence is a common and costly mistake. Ask about scope of practice directly in interview instead.

Practical ways to shorten time to fill

  1. Say the licence requirement in the advert, including whether you accept candidates who are not yet licensed.
  2. Decide who pays for what before you advertise. Visa, licence fees and DataFlow reimbursement are all negotiable, and candidates increasingly compare offers on this.
  3. Prioritise licensed and eligible candidates when you need someone to start soon, and run a parallel pipeline of unlicensed candidates for later starts.
  4. Do not wait for a perfect CV. In a supply-constrained market the strong candidates are gone quickly.
  5. Be concrete about caseload. Session targets and expectations vary widely between centres, and vagueness here loses good candidates at offer stage.

The market context

Demand has grown considerably. Reported growth of around 45% in UAE speech-language pathology postings between 2023 and 2026, expansion of early intervention provision, the National Policy for People of Determination, school health screening covering speech and language milestones, and Ministry of Education requirements for speech-language services in mainstream schools have all contributed. Demand for services and qualified staff currently exceeds supply.

In that environment, employers who move quickly and communicate clearly win candidates. Employers who run long, vague processes lose them to centres that do not.

Common questions

What is the biggest delay when hiring a therapist in the UAE?

Licensing and DataFlow primary source verification, because it depends on how quickly the candidate's university and former employers respond. Candidates who already hold an eligibility letter can start far sooner.

Should we only consider already-licensed candidates?

Not necessarily, but you should separate your pipelines. Prioritise licensed and eligible candidates for near-term starts, and run a parallel pipeline of unlicensed candidates for later starts.

Which licence should we ask for in a job advert?

State the authority explicitly based on your emirate: DHA for Dubai, DOH for Abu Dhabi, MOHAP for the Northern Emirates, and CDA or DCD for counselling and social care roles. This filters applications correctly.

Do employers pay for DataFlow and licence fees in the UAE?

It varies widely and is negotiable. Decide your position before advertising, because candidates increasingly compare offers on who covers visa, licence and verification costs.
