What the rule actually is
Gap of practice, sometimes called discontinuity of practice, is the period you have not worked in your licensed profession. UAE authorities check it before issuing a professional licence, because they want evidence of recent, continuous competence rather than a qualification alone.

How to remediate a gap

- Build a CPD record. Accredited continuing education during the break is the clearest evidence that your knowledge stayed current.
- Arrange supervised clinical training if your gap crosses the threshold. Some authorities run formal routes for this, such as the DOH Return Back to Practice programme in Abu Dhabi.
- Ask the authority in writing what they will accept in your specific case, before you pay for anything.

A little planning protects your eligibility cheaply:
- Keep your home-country registration current throughout, even if you are not practising.
- Do some accredited CPD each year, however small the volume.
