Passing the Prometric exam as a therapist in the UAE
What the exam actually is
The Prometric exam is the computer-based assessment the health authorities use to confirm you can practise safely. It is profession-specific: there is a separate paper for speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and so on. You sit it at a Prometric test centre or, in some cases, via approved online proctoring.
As a guide, allied health papers commonly run to around 150 scenario-style questions in roughly 170 minutes, with fees usually in the region of USD 180 to 300. The exact count, time and fee vary by profession and authority, so confirm the current format on your authority portal before you book.
How many attempts you get
This is the single most important thing to understand before you book, because it changes how you should prepare.
- You generally get three attempts to pass.
- Fail all three and you are typically blocked from re-applying for two years.
- A fourth attempt may sometimes be allowed with special permission, but you should never plan around it.

How to prepare for a first-attempt pass
The candidates who pass first time tend to do the same things. None of them are complicated:
- Practise timed MCQs daily. The exam rewards speed and recognition, not just knowledge. Work through profession-specific question banks under a clock.
- Focus on clinical reasoning, not memorisation. Scenario questions ask what you would do next, not what a term means. Review why each wrong option is wrong.
- Sit full-length timed mocks. Stamina matters over 150 questions. A mock exposes pacing problems before the real thing does.
- Cover the high-yield basics of your field cold — assessment, red flags, safe practice, ethics and scope. These recur.
- Review every mistake properly. A logged, understood error is worth more than ten new questions skimmed.
If you have already failed once
A fail is recoverable, but change something before you re-sit. Sitting the same way twice usually produces the same result. Identify whether the problem was knowledge gaps, timing, or exam technique, and target that specifically. Give yourself real study time between attempts rather than rebooking immediately out of frustration.
Because attempts are limited, it can be worth waiting a few extra weeks to sit prepared rather than burning attempt two on momentum.
